As the artist, my connection to this piece runs deep. It reflects my own inner duality—the choice to let go of a safer, more expected path in order to embrace something riskier, rawer, and more honest. Much like this character, I gave up something familiar in exchange for something more real. It’s a metaphor for my journey: from being a children’s book illustrator in Montreal, Canada, to co-founding Akumu Ink® with Aldora in 2008, to now painting from our studio in the Netherlands—where my creative evolution continues.

My process begins with a rough concept sketch, nothing polished—just a loose vision. I freehand the composition directly onto the canvas, then layer acrylic paint gradually, building shadows and light until I get the mood right. I know the painting is done when it feels like a still image from an animated movie.

It Wasn’t Me is more than a character study. It’s a personal reflection. A whisper to every collector who understands the cost—and beauty—of becoming who they were meant to be.
